Beacon Consulting Ltd released its October 2023 monthly report on Wednesday, November 15,2023. The report is an analysis of security incidents that occurred in Nigeria in the period October01 - 31, 2023. It included an assessment of national and international developments such as thecoup d’etat that occurred in some African countries, the Russian-Ukraine war, and the Israeli-Hamas
war that impacted security in Nigeria.

 Accordingly, the report showed a significant increase in allmetrics for measuring the volatility of security- incidents, fatalities, and abductions.In the General Situation Analysis, the report included an update on the Presidential ElectionTribunal (Supreme Court Ruling), an update on the New Government: Stress Test on the Economyand its Impact on Security, and an update on the Detention of Former CBN Governor, GodwinEmefiele and EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa.

 The Security Spotlight covers the targeting of
Students of Tertiary Institutions for Abduction by Security Threat Actors, and the Governors' effortto tackle Insecurity in their States. 

The Security Analysis of the Off-cycle Elections in Bayelsa, Imoand Kogi States, the Israeli - Hamas War and the Geopolitical Consequence, an update on themilitary coup in Niger: Regional and Geopolitical Implications, and IPOB Secessionist Agitationsand Calls for Referendum were all featured in the security spotlight.According to the report, in the month of October 2023, Nigeria witnessed 935 security incidentswhich represents a 70.6% increase from the data in the September report; 1127 fatalities wererecorded representing a 93.97% increase; 518 persons were abducted representing a 50.6%increase.

A deep dive into the report shows that the North East region recorded the highest number of totalincidents, fatalities, and abductions; while the North West region reported the highest number ofcivilian deaths. 

The conflict between the two non-state actors, Islamic State West Africa Province(ISWAP) and Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal Jihad (JAS) contributed to the increased numberof fatalities recorded in the North East region.
